Sheboygan County Students Create Tribute Flag For Those Who Have Served

In an innovative fusion of art and technology, students from Sheboygan County have created a unique art piece. This project, involving students from elementary to high school, showcases how technology can be creatively integrated into art classes. The art piece, a representation of the American flag, has been donated to the Sheboygan VFW Memorial Post 9156 as a tribute to those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military.

  • 4th and 5th grade students of Sheboygan County, along with South High Art and Tech Ed students, participated in the creation of the art piece.
  • The project was part of interactive art activities promoted by Brian Sommersberger and Kevin Bazan(South High Art Teachers), and Amy Dekker, SASD Tech Innovation Coach, during the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce and INSPIRE Sheboygan County STEAMFest.
  • Using Sphero Bolts and iPads, the younger students painted sheets of foam in the colors of the American flag. Art students at South High School then used these backdrops to create a large-scale flag.
  • Gary Scheller, a Tech Ed teacher, and his students designed a star template and used a wood CNC machine to cut out the stars of the flag, which were then affixed to the flag.
  • The flag measures 4’x7’6’’ and features a 3-tier relief concept, inspired by Jasper John’s 1958 painting, “Three Flags”.

Drawing & Painting Students Develop Painted wood cutouts inspired by Joe Iurato

Learn more: Joe Iurato is a NJ based multidisciplinary artist whose works are built on a foundation of stencils and aerosol. Somewhere in between simplistic and photorealistic, his multi-layer stencils offer a distinctly clean and illustrative aesthetic. While Joe’s paintings have adorned outdoor walls for nearly 20 years, he’s also become noted for the unique placement and photography of miniature painted wood cutouts set in public spaces. Utilizing the outdoor environment to create site-specific installations, and often manipulating our perception of scale and dimensionality, he creates windows into a narrative formed by personal experiences.
